The Just Futures Initiative is a grant program from Borealis Philanthropy that provides flexible funding to grassroots organizations, coalitions, and community-led groups advancing community safety, civil and human rights, democracy protection, and alternatives to criminalization and incarceration. The initiative supports organizations building safer, more inclusive communities through community-driven solutions rather than punitive systems.


Supports organizations working on:


  • Community safety and violence prevention

  • Civil and human rights protection

  • Democracy and civic participation

  • Protest defense and legal protection

  • Alternatives to policing and incarceration

  • Grassroots organizing and power-building

  • Community accountability and belonging


Award Amount


  • Standard grants: $50,000–$100,000

  • Collaborative grants: Up to $200,000

About The Grant

Requirements

  • Be a U.S.-based or U.S. territory-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit or a fiscally sponsored project.


  • Generally have an annual operating budget under $2 million.


  • Be rooted in communities most impacted by criminalization, policing, incarceration, detention, surveillance, or state violence.
